I opened a part-time private psychotherapy practice in 2004. I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW).<\/p>\n<p>I work from <strong>anti-oppression, client-centred and psychodynamic perspectives<\/strong>. This means that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I respect the goals, perspectives and pace that you bring to therapy.<\/li>\n<li>I work to understand you and your experiences in the context of your experiences and relationships (past and present) and the society in which we live.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Main therapeutic approaches I use with individuals are parts work, somatic oriented, <a href=\"https:\/\/farzanadoctorpsychotherapy.com\/?page_id=11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hypnosis,\u00a0<\/a>mindfulness, memory reconsolidation and e<\/strong><strong>nergy psychology. <\/strong>I also borrow also from interpersonal, brief solution focused, cognitive-behavioural, and motivational counseling. I am especially interested in the ways in which the unconscious is helpful in making change and the intersections between emotional and spiritual life. In general, I would describe my approach as more &#8220;bottom up&#8221; versus &#8220;top down&#8221;, which means that I often encourage clients to tune into the body as a way of identifying feelings,<\/p>\n<p><strong>When working with couples, I am influenced by teachers and writers such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estherperel.com\/\">Esther Perel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/stantatkin.com\/\">Stan Tatkin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gottman.com\">The Gottman Institute<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drsuejohnson.com\/\">Sue Johnson<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong>I encourage you to check out all of their websites for videos, articles and other helpful self-help resources.<\/p>\n<p>My experience has included individual, group, couples and family psychotherapy with youth and adults on a variety of issues including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>drug and alcohol use<\/li>\n<li>sexual orientation and gender identity<\/li>\n<li>trauma and loss<\/li>\n<li>relationships (monogamous, non-monogamous and polyamorous)<\/li>\n<li>sexuality (including kink)<\/li>\n<li>cultural\/ethnic\/racial identities<\/li>\n<li>self-esteem<\/li>\n<li>low mood and anxiety\/worry<\/li>\n<li>oppression<\/li>\n<li>female genital mutilation\/cutting<\/li>\n<li>sex work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I supervise other therapists and have provided training to service providers in group work and working with marginalized groups including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer (2SLGBTTQ+) communities.
